The MAMFT conference committee will begin to meet again virtually on February 16th at 9am. If you are interested in volunteering for this committee, please email Dr Alex Iantaffi at president@mamft.net The time commitment is around 1-2 hours per month with some more work required near the conference time in September. All our members, including students and pre-licensure members, are welcome to join this committee.

At our January retreat and Board meeting, we realized that there might be some confusion when it comes to terminology in relation to volunteering options for MAMFT. Below are some definitions of the different volunteer options with MAMFT:

Board Member: Formal position where an individual volunteers and is voted in or appointed to the Board for a specific seat and term. Time commitment of 5-6 hr/mo avg over the course of 2-3 years.

Committee Member: Volunteer position within a specific committee with a focus on committee-specific goals, such as events, promotion/fundraising, social justice, or conference/training. Time commitment of 2hr hr/mo avg for 6 months or more.

Special Project Volunteer: Volunteer position where an individual contributes to MAMFT on an ad hoc basis. There is no pre-established time commitment and the individual is only affiliated with the specific projects, tasks, or events volunteered for.

Dear MAMFT members,

The Board wanted to share why we have not made a formal statement about what is happening in Palestine and Israel right now, as well as in Sudan, Ukraine and unfortunately many other places across the globe. We discussed this at our December Board meeting and agreed a larger, ongoing conversation is needed about the capacity, scope and policy of how MAMFT responds to these types of issues

What do we mean by that? As a small, volunteer Board, we want to use our capacity to best serve the organization and steward its resources. We want to be engaged locally, since we are a state-based organization. However, as systemic therapists, we’re also aware that what is happening globally impacts our members and local communities in a number of ways. This presents us with the issue of when and how to comment on events unfolding globally, especially since we only have 2 part-time (wonderful) staff, a completely volunteer Board, and no PR team!

We don’t want to only make statements. We want to do the actual work of living up to our values and mission as well as maintaining the organization and its day-to-day operations running. Thus, the Board will be working on a policy on when to make statements, how to ensure they align with our values and mission, and how to match actions to words. Having such a policy would ensure we can be more consistent as an organization, rather than having messaging shift when members rotate on and off the Board.

We understand that much of our Board’s work is not always visible to our members and that we’re still young as an independent non-profit since we separated from AAMFT in 2018. We appreciate your patience and welcome your feedback and questions, as always.

The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State is reaching out to make you aware of reporting requirements that go into effect on January 1, 2024, that may require your business to report its beneficial ownership information to the Federal government. You do not need to take any action now.

Beginning on January 1, 2024, many companies in the United States will have to report information about their beneficial owners, i.e., the individuals who ultimately own or control the company. They will have to report the information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). FinCEN is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. 

NOTE: This will be a free filing that companies can complete themselves. Be wary of official-looking mail from a third-party company offering to complete the beneficial ownership reporting on behalf of your company for a fee. All questions should be directed to FinCEN and not the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. If you have questions, contact FinCEN here.

Do I Need to Report?

Most businesses in Minnesota are small businesses that may need to file. Your company may need to report information about its beneficial owners if it is:

1. A corporation, a limited liability company (LLC), or was otherwise created in the United States by filing a document with a secretary of state or any similar office under the law of a state or Indian tribe; or
2. A foreign company and was registered to do business in any U.S. state or Indian tribe by such a filing.

There are 23 types of entities that are exempt from the beneficial ownership information reporting requirements. FinCEN's Small Entity Compliance Guide includes checklists for each of the 23 exemptions that may help determine whether your company qualifies for an exemption. How Do I Report?

Reporting companies will have to report beneficial ownership information electronically through FinCEN's website: www.fincen.gov/boi. 

When Do I Report?

Reports will be accepted starting on January 1, 2024.

• If your company was created or registered before January 1, 2024, you will have until January 1, 2025, to report BOI.
• If your company is created or registered on or after January 1, 2024, you must report BOI within 90 days of notice of creation or registration.
• Any updates or corrections to beneficial ownership information that you previously filed with FinCEN must be submitted within 30 days.

FinCEN cannot accept reports before January 1, 2024.

*What You Should Know About Mail Solicitations

The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State has become aware of mailers sent out to Minnesota businesses that misrepresent our fees for filings such as annual renewals for entities.

Business owners in Minnesota have reported receiving official-looking mail from third-party companies implying that they must pay a fee to complete filings for business renewals or to comply with reporting requirements. Be wary of this mail, as many of the filings can be completed through our office for free or at a lower cost than what is being offered.

The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office will never send renewal notices or correspondence by mail. Our office will only send annual courtesy emails about renewing your business.

MFTs are Medicare eligible starting January 1st 2024!

MAMFT wants to pass on the information provided by AAMFT and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) on registration:

2. Visit the CMS provider REGISTRATION PAGE

Since Medicare is a national program, MAMFT will often need to defer to our national partners on best practices in this initial year of MFT eligibility. We will do our best to continue to pass on resources as they become available.

Please keep talking to your representatives about this issue! Awareness of the issue and how it impacts their constituents is crucial! Too many people from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities do not receive quality mental health care. Systems of care tend to be a one-size-fits-all approach. Culturally Informed Culturally Responsive Mental Health Task Force was established by MN Statute in 2021, and is charged with submitting recommendations for making Minnesota’s mental health care more culturally informed and culturally responsive. To make strong and actionable recommendations, we are gathering the insight of providers like you.

You are invited to add your voice to inform these recommendations by joining a focus group or by completing a survey. You’ll be asked about your experiences working in the field, challenges you have encountered, and solutions you envision. We will confidentially incorporate your insight into our recommendations to the legislature.

These are the groups we would like to engage in these focus groups and survey:

• Clinical professionals of color (licensed, grad degree)
• Non-Clinical professionals of color (degree but may not be licensed)
• BIPOC owners or leaders of mental health organizations
• Pre-licensed students and post grads
• BIPOC higher ed. educators
