Join Emily Coler-Hanson in discussing "Before Gender: Lost Stories from Trans History, 1850–1950" by Eli Erlick.
In Before Gender, historian and activist Eli Erlick uncovers a rich and often overlooked history of gender diversity in the century before modern identity labels like “transgender” came into use. Spanning from 1850 to 1950, the book draws on personal narratives, medical case studies, and archival records to highlight individuals who lived outside conventional gender norms across different cultures and regions. This book invites readers to reflect on how language, culture, and power influence our understanding of gender, past and present, and offers a compelling foundation for thoughtful discussion.
