Presenter Bios:  Sara Barrick, LMFT, SEP, has dedicated her private practice to helping individuals and families navigate misophonia, a condition where certain commonplace sounds and visuals can trigger the fight-flight response. Having struggled with misophonia for twenty-five years before finding relief in 2018, she has a deep understanding of the challenges her clients face. Sara employs a holistic, systemic, and trauma-informed approach, drawing on her training in systems theory, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Coherence Therapy, and Brainspotting. Through her work with hundreds of misophonia clients, regular participation in consultation groups with misophonia providers nationwide, and her leadership role in the Misophonia Freedom Project—which conducts interviews with those who have overcome the condition—Sara has identified key themes related to the factors that contribute to misophonia and effective paths to relief. She is set to release her book, Demystifying Misophonia: A Holistic Approach to Freedom, in early 2025. Previously known as Sara Bidler, she served for many years as Administrative Assistant and Executive Director for MAMFT.

Description:

Misophonia is a rich condition to work with, for which LMFTs are uniquely positioned to provide support. In this workshop, you will learn how to assist individuals and families struggling with misophonia from a both/and, systemic, and trauma-informed perspective. Sara will clarify the various risk factors contributing to the development of misophonia. While immediate coping strategies will be shared, the primary focus will be on identifying and addressing the underlying issues—what's at "the bottom of one’s misophonia iceberg." Sara will help you wrap your head around this complex condition, as clarity is essential for helping sufferers find freedom. She will discuss the interplay between CBT-type techniques and memory reconsolidation (trauma healing), and provide practical methods primarily from Coherence Therapy. With misophonia affecting 15-20% of the population and a limited number of knowledgeable providers, there is a critical need for professionals to understand this condition. This workshop also presents a valuable opportunity to expand your practice.

Objectives:

1. Learn the risk factors and conditions that result in misophonia, so you can help your clients make sense of why they are having a fight-flight response to everyday type sounds/visuals.

2. Learn coping, advocacy and family strategies for immediate management of misophonia, equipping you to share practical tools with your clients.

3. Learn how to identify and address the root causes of misophonia, so your clients can experience transformational change and freedom.
