Description:

Stepfamilies are quickly becoming the most common family structure in our country and as such we are seeing more individuals, couples, and families in our offices looking to us as clinicians for support in navigating this unique system and associated dynamics. Stepfamilies are their own distinct type of family system and warrant at least a basic framework and understanding for clinicians who are engaging with clients involved in a stepfamily system. Additionally, stepfamilies are often quite complex and having an awareness of legal and ethical pitfalls and opportunities can support all clinicians in doing their best work with this population. In this presentation, we will offer a brief foundational understanding of what research has shown about stepfamilies, review the unique life cycle of stepfamily systems, identify opportunities to support resiliency, and address common challenges facing various kinds of stepfamilies. We will also explore the self of therapist and ethical considerations for doing this work with your own clients.

Objectives:

1. Participants will learn about the unique culture of stepfamilies and statistics relevant to these family systems.

2. Participants will gain an understanding of common blended family challenges and therapeutic strategies for mitigating these challenges to support resiliency.

3. Participants will identify and address common ethical considerations when working with complex family systems and collaborating with various professionals involved.

4. Participants will practice applying knowledge and strategies to specific client scenarios through case conceptualization.
