Presenter's Bio: M. Susan Pfau, LMFT, is a behavioral health predoctoral intern at St. John's Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program (2022-23). Her career goals are to provide behavioral health for patients across their lifespan in an integrated medical setting in the Twin Cities, supervise LMFTs pursuing licensure, and become a faculty member at a higher education institution. Susan specializes in diagnosis and management of mental health in ages 0-5. She is pursuing a PhD in Medical Family Therapy at Northcentral University. Faculty at St. Mary's University of MN in the MA MFT department teaching medical family therapy.

Workshop Description: This workshop will be on the development of the adolescent brain and interventions with adolescents experiencing depression and anxiety. The content will focus primarily on the brain development during ages 12 years to 22 years with incorporating the research from Dan Siegel, MD, interventions for adolescents experiencing anxiety and depression, and the incorporation of diverse family and cultural beliefs in behavioral healthcare.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Gain an understanding of the truths and myths of the adolescent brain.
  2. Understanding the application of family systems lens when seeing adolescents experiencing depression and anxiety.
  3. Understanding the incorporation of diverse family and cultural beliefs in behavioral healthcare.
