Keynote: "Toxic Parents or Inspired Geniuses? Examining the Role of our Foundational Models in a Contemporary World" Steve Harris, PhD, LMFT and Zamzam Dini, MA, LAMFT
Description: The original family therapy theories and theorists challenged the ideas of contemporary psychology back in their day. They revolutionized the way mental health professionals thought about change and their role as agents of change. But the world has changed considerably since the 1970s and 80s when these ideas were new. And, most of the people who were putting forth these ideas represented the majority culture and were men. What is the value of these ideas today? Should we be passing these theories on to new members of our field? We now live in a world with many more voices, representing differing views of what is healthy, normal, or desirable. Our speakers ask these questions and provide some thoughts on the value of family therapy's past as we navigate the mental health and relational needs of a contemporary society that is more open to seeing, understanding, and honoring the diversity of our human family.
We are including some discussion questions for you to view and process after watching the recorded webinar.
