Workshop Description: Both supervisors and supervisees often share marginalized identities with their clients, as well as with one another. In this session we will discuss the impact of systemic oppression on the supervisory relationship from a range of perspectives. We will also address how the supervisory relationship is impacted by what is happening in the broader societal, cultural and political contexts. This session will include both didactic and interactive content. Both supervisors and supervisees are welcome to attend this session.

Workshop Objectives: The objective of this session is to develop the space for a systemic and reflective conversation about power, privilege and oppression in the context of the supervisory relationship. I believe these types of conversations around power and systems to be foundational to the practice of marriage and family therapy. The content will be particularly suitable for supervisors who may hold dominant societal identities while working with supervisees with marginalized identities and may not be aware of their implicit bias and/or know how to address these topics within the context of supervision.
