Presented By: Lambers Fisher, MS, LMFT, MDiv
Workshop Description: Unintentional cultural offenses and misunderstandings often contribute to disconnected personal and professional relationships. Unfortunately, helping professionals often feel paralyzed by the fear that we don’t know enough about other cultures to try to counsel clients different than themselves. This workshop will help reduce those fears by providing an attainable goal for increasing cultural competence, as well as practical strategies for reducing the negative impact of unavoidable cultural misunderstandings on therapeutic rapport and effectiveness.
Workshop Objectives: MAMFT encourages mental health professionals to embrace who they are and support their clients in doing the same. This workshop seeks to increase personal and professional cultural competence and increase one’s awareness of a greater variety of cultural factors that contribute to who they are. This workshop provides strategies for navigating the similarities and differences they may have with their clients and larger community, as well as for addressing reactions to those who feel as though they haven’t been valued for who they are. These strategies contribute to increased unity in understanding as willingness to join together in finding shared solutions to individual and communal challenges.
