Workshop Description: Trauma significantly impacts our physical, emotional, and psychological identity as well as our interpersonal relationships.  This experiential and didactic workshop will introduce somatic techniques for working with clients who have experienced trauma, including 1) neurological perspectives on the impact of trauma; 2) specific body and movement-based interventions for working with various types of trauma; and 3) considerations for working with groups and individuals from a multicultural perspective. Diagnostic issues and contraindications for embodied trauma work will also be briefly addressedThe participant will: • Briefly learn about Somatic Experiencing as a frameworks for interventions when working with trauma; • Learn the neurophysiological impact of trauma on the body, mind, emotions and interpersonal relationships; • Practice selected basic techniques and interventions for working with trauma; • Briefly explore multi-cultural considerations when working with trauma; • Briefly discuss self-care strategies for practitioners working with trauma clients;

Presenter’s Bio: Barbara Nordstrom-Loeb, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, board certified dance/movement therapist, Laban Movement Analyst, Somatic Experiencing and Ways of Seeing Practitioner. She is trained in Somatic/Body Therapies and uses alternative healing modalities to address psychological, somatic, and spiritual transformation.  She teaches at the University of Minnesota and directs a Dance/Movement Training program in Minneapolis. She has a private practice with individuals, families and couples specializing in attachment, trauma, Dissociative Disorders, Depression, anxiety, identity and life transition issues. Barbara’s diversity expertise includes working with GLBTQ clients, women’s issues, and with a range of different nationalities, cultures and religious/spiritual practices.   Her international Dance/ Movement Therapy teaching experiences include courses in Vilnius, Lithuania (1997), Tallinn University, in Tallinn Estonia through a Fulbright Scholar’s Grant (2011) and with Inspirees Institute in China (2014-present) and in Seoul, South Korea. She is past chair of the American Dance/Movement Therapy Association Alternate Route Educators’ Subcommittee. She has also published on the use of trauma and DMT-based approaches with people diagnosed with Eating Disorders, the development of DMT programming in long term care facilities, and the historic development of DMT in Estonia.

Requests must be made in writing. Refunds will be given on requests received 10 days prior to the training event. A 20% administrative fee per person will be deducted from all cancellations. No refunds will be given if received less than 10 days prior to the event, but registrants can transfer their registration to another person.
