Workshop Description: Movement is a language that continually communicates and expresses all of aspects of our identity, stories and past experiences as well as our current emotions and moods. Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), a non-verbal systemic framework is a complex but powerful lens for revealing the subtle meanings embedded in all movement patterns and expressions. LMA provides a comprehensive non-verbal map able to increase awareness of non-verbal expressions and guide clinical interventions. It can also enhances sensitivity to multicultural non-verbal expressions and promotes a deeper understanding of all forms of non-verbal communication. This workshop will use experiential explorations, observation and didactic discussion to introduce LMA-based frameworks for understanding movement and body patterns and augmenting clinical efficacy.
Workshop Objectives: Participants will be introduced to role and mechanisms of movement in communication, expression and as a reflection of personality, culture, and other aspects of the human experience. Participants will be introduced to frameworks for describing, analyzing, and working with all movement expressions from micro (physiological) to macro (gestural) -movement patterns. Participants will experience and practice selected examples for working with non-verbal behaviors in relationship to clinical assessment and interventions. Participants will explore ways of adapting movement and body interventions to specific populations and therapeutic goals. Participants will discuss the efficacy and counter indications for working non-verbal movement patterns in relationship to specific populations and settings.
Presenter’s Bio: Barbara Nordstrom-Loeb MA-MFT, MFA LMFT, BC-DMT, CMA, PWAssociate, SEP, WoS, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, board certified dance/movement therapist, Laban Movement Analyst, Somatic Experiencing and Ways of Seeing Practitioner. She is trained in Somatic/Body Therapies and uses alternative healing modalities to address growth, understanding and healing. She teaches at the University of Minnesota and directs a Dance/Movement Training program in Minneapolis. She has a private practice with individuals, families and couples specializing in attachment, trauma, Dissociative Disorders, Depression, anxiety, identity and life transition issues. Barbara’s diversity expertise includes working with GLBTQ clients, women’s issues, and with a range of different nationalities, cultures and religious/spiritual practices. Her international Dance/ Movement Therapy teaching experiences include teaching Lithuania (1997), Estonia on a Fulbright Scholar’s Grant (2011), Seoul, S. Korea (2018- 2019 and with Inspirees Institute in China (2014-present). She has also published on the use of trauma and DMT-based approaches with people diagnosed with Eating Disorders, the development of DMT programming in long term care facilities, and the historic development of DMT in Estonia.
