Workshop Description: This workshop will address participants’ fears and concerns around the embrace of social justice within the therapeutic context. Time will be given to concepts of disclosure, self-awareness, self-soothing, and the concept of the tabula rasa. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of: how to authentically show up for their clients as ethical warriors in the social justice arena, how to gain and retain the clients they want, and how social justice is an ethical way to practice.
Workshop Objectives: Participants will gain insight around their own privileges and biases; Participants will have a better understanding of how to authentically show up for clients; Participants will gain knowledge around how social justice can aid in growing their practice; Participants will gain awareness around how and when to bring social justice concepts into the therapy room; Participants will practice mindfulness as a tool to combat fear and client road blocks.
Justine Mastin, MA, LMFT, LADC, E-RYT 200 is the owner/founder of Blue Box Counseling, a private practice in Minneapolis. Justine specializes in working with clients who self-identify as being outside the mainstream—such as those in the geek, secular, and LGBTQIA communities. Justine is also the fearless leader of YogaQuest, a yoga organization that blends geek narratives with yoga to reach this underserved population. In addition to her work in the office/studio, Justine appears at pop culture conventions around the country where she teaches yoga and speaks on geek wellness topics. Justine contributed chapters to Supernatural Psychology: Roads Less Traveled, and the upcoming Daredevil Psychology: The Devil You Know, and Westworld Psychology: Violent Delights, and The Psychology of Zelda. Justine is also the co-host the podcast Starship Therapise, a member of the Geek Therapy Network.
Ashley Myhre, MA, LAMFT sees clients at her Minneapolis-based practice, POW! Psychotherapy, where she specializes in helping nerds and geeks heal from trauma, overcome anxiety, and improve relationships. She founded LEARN Mental Health MN, which centralizes information about training and development opportunities for mental health providers across the state. Additionally, she provides practice building and management consulting to other professionals, and is completing a doctorate in marriage and family therapy at Argosy University, Twin Cities.
Requests must be made in writing. Refunds will be given on requests received 10 days prior to the training event. A 20% administrative fee per person will be deducted from all cancellations. No refunds will be given if received less than 10 days prior to the event, but registrants can transfer their registration to another person.
