This training will lay out a four step process for therapists to use to ensure that choices they are making in their therapy sessions, with co-workers, in record-keeping and advertising, all met ethical standards as laid out by the Minnesota Administrative Rules (5300.0350 CODE OF ETHICS). It is not practical or realistic to think that one training can educate LMFTs about every possible ethical decision they may come across, and provide black and white answers. This training would lay out a clear process to help LMFTs understand, evaluate and interpret their code of ethics. The content of this training will be drawn, in part, from the manual “Ethics in Marriage and Family Therapy” written by Robert Woody and Jane Woody and published in 2001 by the Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
The process of ethical decision making includes:
- Interpreting a situation as requiring an ethical decision
- Formulating an ethical course of action
- Integrating personal and professional values
- Implementing an action plan
- Participants will get an overview of the existing ethical standards, a better understanding of the process of decision making, and an opportunity to apply the process using real-world examples.
