Workshop Description: Eating disorders are far more common than most of us realize and have far reaching psychological and physical consequences. Most mental health professionals are not provided the appropriate training to be able to diagnose and treat those with eating disorders. This training will give insight into how to diagnose eating disorders early on in order to work towards early intervention and prevention of these diagnoses. The various eating disorder diagnoses will be discussed in reference to DSM criteria and how to recognize early warning signs. The main tenants of how to treat eating disorders at different levels of care will be introduced, as well as what to say and what not to say to a client who expresses concerns about eating, food, body image, and/or weight. Attendees will learn ways to assess for, diagnose, and start to treat eating disorders in an outpatient, non-specialty clinic/private practice. Throughout this training, discussion will also be had around current cultural narratives and how these narratives, in conjunction with our own biases and/or lack of knowledge, can get in the way of early intervention and prevention of eating disorders. Self-care of professionals treating eating disorders will also be considered. The influence of the family system on the formation and maintenance of eating disorders, as well as their vital role in the healing process will be highlighted at various points in the training.

Workshop Objectives: Participants will be able to:
 1. Assess for eating disorders and eating disorder risk factors as mental health professionals in order to aid in prevention and early intervention. 2. Learn detailed information about treatment of eating disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and how the family system plays a role. 3. Identify current, cultural narratives and personal biases around food and body and how these contribute to eating disorder diagnoses, including how their own family systems as clinicians have impacted their view of eating disorders, food, and/or body image. 4. Learn how family systems contribute to eating disorders and how they can be the key to healing.
